Charles Henry Parsley (1856 – 16 May 1927)
Charles was born in Norwich and was the son of John and Elizabeth, brother of George. His father was a carpenter and his mother a dressmaker and by 1871 the family were living at 5 John Street, Cambridge. Aged 15 Charles had started to work as a carpenter (1871) and married Emma Hall (1861-1950) in 1879. The couple had six children: Alice Emma (1880-1936), Jessie (1887-1987), Elsie May (1888-1986), Winifred (1890-1994), Leslie Victor (1987-1982) and Gladys (1898-1990). They lived at City Road (1881), 1 Auckland Road (1891/1901) and 8 Newmarket Road (1911). Charles was documented as a carpenter/joiner, but by 1901 was a fireman.
He was on duty in September 1909 when he was called to a fire in a cowshed in Abbey Street. The Cambridge Independent Press reported ‘considerable excitement was caused in St. Andrew’s Street on Saturday afternoon about 5 o’clock when an alarm of fire in Abbey Street was received at the Central Fire Station. With the promptness customary of our Brigade, the engine was got out, horsed and then driven to the scene of the outbreak, in a short space of time. On arrival it was found that the fire had originaated in a loft over a cowshed belonging to Mr. Charles Arnold, dairyman. The firemen fixed the hose and the flames were quickly put out. Some amount of damage was done, but it is covered by insurance’.
Charles Parsley died aged 71 years old.
Alice Emma Parsley (1880 – 23 December 1936)
Alice was the eldest daughter of Charles and Emma. She lived at home, and the 1911 census recorded her as being partially paralysed. She died at 8 Newmarket Road aged 56 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 28 December.
