Caroline Hills Pratt (née Goshawk) (27 February 1845 – 28 February 1887)

Caroline was the daughter of Richard and Marianne (née Hills) Goshawk. Richard was a publican who ran a business on Bridge Street.  He died in 1855 when Caroline was 12 years old, and her mother died the following year leaving Caroline and her elder sister Marianne Eliza as orphans.  In 1861 they were living with their maternal grandparents Robert and Catherine Hills at 27 Bridge Street. Robert Hills was a cabinet maker.   In 1871 Caroline was living with her maternal aunt Caroline Hills at 22 New Square.  Her sister Marianne Eliza died in Mecklenburg in Germany in August 1877.

She married David Evans Pratt (1853-1927) on 1st May 1878 at St. Sepulchre’s Church in Cambridge.  David was a grocer, and son of William Pratt who had been coroner for Ely.  By the time of her marriage Caroline was living at Maid’s Causeway.    David and Caroline had at least two children: Marianne Eliza Hills (1879-1959) and Hubert Evans Hills (1881-1923).  In 1881 they were living at 17 Magdalene Street, where David was employing 7 hands in his grocery shop.  Caroline died aged 42 years old at home at Magdalene Street.

David Pratt married for a second time in 1889 to Ellen Wilson Bodger. He had a further two children by his second wife and died in 1927 aged 74 years old.
