Frances Smith (Fanny) (née Barker) (c.1814 – 6 March 1890)
Fanny was born in Histon and baptised there on 3 July 1814. She was the daughter of Ephraim and Mary and married Joseph Smith in 1840. The couple had at least seven children: Mary Ann (1842-), Rebecca (1844-), Joseph Henry (1846-1907), Annie Maria (1848-), Harriett (1850-), Susan Frances (1852-1941) and Caroline Powenceby (1857-1930). Joseph was a hairdresser and the family lived at 27 Trumpington Street (1851) and then 11 Doric Street. Fanny died in 1890 aged 76 years old.
Joseph Horatio Smith (13 December 1811 – 3 January 1900)
Joseph was born in Hull and baptised on 1 November 1813. He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth and married Fanny Barker in Cambridge. After he was widowed he went to live at 7 Blackmoor Head Yard (off Bridge Street) and died aged 88 years old.
Susan Frances Priest (29 November 1852 – 28 April 1941)
Susan was the daughter of Joseph and Fanny and married Lazarus Priest on 19 August 1875 at St. Paul’s Church. They lived in Joseph’s home village of Littlebury in Essex for a few years where their first two children were born: Joseph Henry (1877-1951) and Florence Mary (1880-1952) but then returned to lived in Cambridge where their other two children were born: Francis John (1882-1969) and Arthur George Fred Barker (1886-1975). In 1891 the family were living at Jordan’s Yard which was the home of John Eyton Bickersteth Mayor, John was a priest, fellow of St. John’s College and professor of Latin, and Susan was documented as being a housekeeper, and Lazarus as a college servant.
After she was widowed in 1893 she continued to work as housekeeper for John until presumably his death in December 1910. She then remained living at 5 Jordan’s Yard which she ran as a University Lodging House. Susan died at the Grove Nursing Home aged 88 years old.
Lazarus Joseph Priest (28 January 1849 – 12 February 1893)
Lazarus was born in Littlebury just outside Saffron Walden and baptised there on 11 March 1849. He was the son of farmer Joseph Priest and his wife Sarah and aged 22 was working on the family farm. He married Susan Smith when he was 26 and they returned to Littlebury where he continued to farm (1881) before moving to Cambridge to work as a college servant. He died aged 44 years old.
