Benjamin George Read (1861 – 1 March 1938)

Benjamin was the son of George and Sarah Read.  He was born and grew up in Somersham near Huntingdon where his father was a railway porter.  By 1881 the family had moved to live at 10 Great Eastern Street and Benjamin was working as a railway labourer. In 1891 he was still living on Great Eastern Street but was by now working as a railway porter.  He married Ellen Orris in late 1891 and they had three children together Hilda Beatrice May [1896-1974], Kenneth Lewis [1901-1972] plus another child who died young.

Benjamin continued working on the railways – as a boiler washer for locomotives.  He died aged 77 years old.

Ellen Read [nee Orris] (29 November 1861 – 16 February 1954)

Ellen was born in Great Wratting in Suffolk.  She was the daughter of a shoemaker – Henry Orris and his wife Maria. Henry Orris died when Ellen was 6 years old and she then was brought up by Maria Orris, who was a ‘needlewoman’.  In 1881 aged 20 Ellen was a housemaid to the Gusteen family in Haverhill. She married Benjamin Read when she was 30 years old.

They lived at 43 Great Eastern Street [1901], and later at 64 Cavendish Road [1911].  She was widowed in 1938 when she was 77 years old, and the went to live with her daughter Hilda at 94 Cavendish Road.  Hilda had married Arthur Wilson, an undergardener in  1938.  Hilda, Arthur and Ellen continued to live at 94 Cavendish Road and Ellen died there in February 1954 aged 92 years old.  She left effects valued at £247.
