Located in the Holy Trinity parish area, between the south path and the south boundary wall, near the south end of the central path, the Scales family grave had a cross (6 ft 6 in high, according to the funeral report) on a triple plinth, with inscriptions on three faces of the plinth, surrounded by interior and exterior square kerb stones, all in grey marble. The cross, which was made by Hillier & Co of Market Street, has been damaged and replaced by a simple triangular coping stone.

Most unusually, the Scales grave forms a matching pair with that of the Miller family, diagonally adjacent to one another, the Miller grave in white marble

Hannah Scales (née Young) (1833-1886)
Hannah  was born in 1833 in Thriplow.  She was the daughter of  Charles and Sarah Young – her father farmed 70 acres and employed two men [1851 census]. She married George Scales Snr in 1858 in Royston.  They had nine children in total. She died in 11 July 1886 in Hastings, Sussex and was buried in Cambridge.

George Scales was born in Northwold, Norfolk, in 1834. By the early 1850s he was living in Ely before moving to Cambridge in 1857. There, in 1866, he established the Cambridge Brewery in King Street, which he ran until his death in 1904. From that date, three of his children (Albert Samborn Scales, Alfred Scales and Mrs Hannah Matilda Miller), as the ‘Executors of George Scales’, ran it until 1926, when the business was sold to Barclay, Perkins & Co. of Southwark, and brewing ceased.
In the 1870s, he stood successfully as a town councillor for Market Ward, a position he held for twenty years, serving on various committees, and as an alderman for five years. He was also a freemason. In 1898, he took over the Alma Brewery in Russell Street, owned by his son George Scales junior. He died 20 January 1904, aged 89.

Kate Beatrice Scales (née Cave) (1869-1918)

Kate was born in Wandsworth, the daughter of Frederick and Caroline Cave. Her father was a merchant and later brewer’s traveller.  She married Alfred Scales in 1895 – Alfred [1868 – 1936] was the youngest son of George Scales Snr.  They lived at 6 Kings Street, Cambridge for most of their married life (where his father had the brewery).  They did not have any children, and Alfred later lived at 60 De Freville Avenue after Kate had died.
