“In Jesus’ keeping we leave you sleeping”
George Rolph (1867 – 1913)
George was born in Fulbourn, and grew up in Swaffham Bulbeck. Aged 3 he was living with his widowed mother Ann and siblings. He married Susan Barton in Newmarket in 1895.
George and Susan were living at High Street, Cherry Hinton in 1901. He was a fitters engineer, and Daisy Ruse was living with them aged 1 year old. She was described as a ‘boarder’ but grew up with them and seems to have been an unofficial adopted daughter to the couple. They had no children of their own.
By 1911 George, Susan and Daisy were living at 15 Cyprus Road, and George was a pit cement labourer. He died in 1913 aged around 46 years old.
Susan Rolph [nee Barton] (1867 – 1930)
Susan was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Barton. She was born in Isleham, and her father was an agricultural labourer. Aged 13 in 1881 she was in domestic service, but was living at home in Isleham. In 1891 she was living at Brooklyn in Cherry Hinton, and was a domestic cook for Carter Wilson and his family – Carter was a banker.
She married George Rolph in 1895, and was widowed in 1913. Susan died in Cambridge in 1930.
Amy Abbott Daisy Ruse ( 17 October 1899 – 8 January 1975)
Daisy was born in Isleham, but was brought up by George and Susan Rolph. She was living with them at 18 months old, and perhaps the link between the families originated in Isleham. Daisy lived with George and Susan like a daughter. In 1930 to 1939 she was living at 15 Cyprus Road, and appears on the electoral roll with Thomas Course, and Susan Flack. In 1950 – 1960 she appears on the electoral roll living with Doris and William Rawlinson and Thomas Course at Mill Cottage, Hurst Park Avenue. In 1966 she was living at 16 Warren Road, and she died there in 1975. She died a spinster.
