James Sell (c.1804 – 30 October 1872)
James was born in Saffron Walden and married Catharine Sutter on 2 November 1824. They had at least seven children: Elizabeth (1827-1894), Sarah Ann (1829-1918), Walter (1831-1862), William (1835-1841), Henry (1838-1904), Harriet Mary (1842-1916) and William James (1847-1915). James was a shoemaker and the family lived at 6 Saxon Street (1841), 16 South Street (1851) and 26 Panton Street (1861/1871). By the time the census of 1871 was taken he had retired and was living with his daughters Sarah and Harriet, and grandson. He died aged 68 years old.
His probate records show a date of death of 25 October, but his grave monument records it as 30 October.
Catharine Sell (née Stutter) (c.1804 – 27 November 1860)
Catharine was born in Newmarket, and is believed to have been the daughter of Pell and Ann (née Skulthorpe) Stutter. She was baptised on 11 January 1804 in Newmarket and married when she was 20 years old. Catharine died aged 56 years old.
Harriet Mary Sell (1841 – 9 June 1916)
Harriet was the youngest daughter of James and Catharine. She never married and lived at home with her parents. In 1871 she was working as a laundress with her sister Sarah. The sisters then moved to live at 64 Russell Street where they continued to work as laundresses (1881) but had both stopped working by 1891. Harriet died aged 74 years old.
Sarah Ann Sell (1829 – 9 December 1918)
Sarah lived with her sister at 64 Russell Street, and died two years after her aged 89 years old. She was still resident at Russell Street in 1918, but died in Fulbourn.
James and Catharine’s great grandson Percy Pilgrim is also buried at Mill Road Cemetery. He was the grandson of their daughter Elizabeth Pilgrim (née Sell).
