Isabella Ann Shaw (née Samuel) (1863 – 29 August 1905)
Isabella was born in Hauxton and was the daughter of William and Martha Samuel. Her father was a copperlite miner, and she grew up at 33 Church Street in Hauxton. Aged 18 (1881) she was living at 2 Kings Parade and was a general servant to the Swan family. She married Allison Shaw in 1887.
Allison was Head Porter at Emmanuel College, and the couple lived at 28 Earl Street (1891) and later at 7 Victoria Street (1901). The couple had at least four children: Jack Allison (1888-1971), Fred William (1890-1919), Mabel Thirza De Freville (1892-1912) and Hilda Martha (1893-1924). Isabella Shaw died aged 42, at the Nurses’ Hostel, Thompson’s Lane.
Fred William Shaw served in the RAF in the First World War, and died in Bonn, Germany in 1919. Hilda Martha Shaw emigrated to Australia in 1913, and died there in July 1924.
Mabel Thirza De Freville Shaw (1892 – 29 January 1912)
Mabel was the eldest daughter of Allison and Isabella Shaw. In the census of 1911, she was living at 27 Clarendon Road with her father, step mother Emma and siblings. She was working as a draper’s apprentice at the time. She died aged 19 years old in 1912.
