Rebecca Shipp (née Gates) (1850 – 3 July 1911)

Rebecca grew up at 1 Coldham’s Lane and was the daughter of William and Elizabeth.  Her father was a labourer, her mother a washerwoman. She married John Shipp in 1874 and they had two daughters: Martha Elizabeth (Pat) (1877-1933) and Margaret Mary (1880-1955). John was a grocer and they lived at 95 Russell Street (1881) and Victoria Road (1891). He later ran a fishmonger’s shop at 218 Mill Road (1901/1911).

John William Shipp (1852 – 22 December 1931)

John was the son of shepherd William and Elizabeth Shipp. He was born in Castle Rising, near King’s Lynn, Norfolk and was baptised there on 11 July 1852. In 1871 John was lodging at High Green, Great Shelford and working as a railway porter, although he later worked as a grocer/fishmonger.

He married for a second time in 1912 to Gertrude Hubbard and they continued to run the fish shop until 1920 before moving to 30 Catharine Street. He died at home aged 79 years old.

Gertrude Emma Shipp (née Hubbard) (22 January 1858 – 30 January 1940)

Gertrude was born in Bury St. Edmunds and was the daughter of Henry and Emma Hubbard. Henry was a gardener and in 1861 the family were living at West Street in Mildenhall. She worked as a parlourmaid  in Harrow (1891) and then as a housemaid at Grove Hill School, Harrow (1901). In 1911 she was living at 16 Great Eastern Street with her widowed mother and sister Emily, and was working as a housekeeper. She married widower John Shipp when she was 54 years old and died at Catharine Street. Baptist minister Henry Baker was an executor of her will.
