Arthur Simmonds (22 September 1855 – 6 January 1940)

Arthur was born in Sutton, Surrey and baptised at St. Nicholas’ Church in Sutton on 21 October 1855.  He was the son of William and Jane and his father worked as a gardener.  Aged 16 Arthur was working as a page boy and aged 23 was a gardener like his father. He married Maria Wiggett on 14 September 1878 at St. Mary’s Church in Caterham.  Arthur and Maria had four children: Arthur Edward (1880-1952), Bertha Ethel (1882-1927), Jessie Harriet (1884-1941) and Florence Eliza (1889-).

Arthur worked on the railway as a porter and then a guard and the family moved to Cambridge to live at 35 York Street (1881), 84 Great Eastern Street (1891) and then 62 Argyle Street (at least 1901 onwards).  He was widowed in 1936 and lived with daughter Florence and son in law Ernest at Argyle Street. He died at home aged 84 years old.

Maria Simmonds  (née Wiggett) (1853 – 16 December 1936)

Maria was the daughter of William and Sophia and was born in Thorpe Market, Nofolk. She was baptised on 8 May 1853 and grew up in the village of Thorpe market where her father was a bricklayer. Aged 18 she was living at Hoveton Hall and working as a housemaid for Rev. Randall and Emily Burroughes before marrying Arthur Simmonds when she was 25 years old. Maria died in Cambridge in December 1936.

Jessie Harriet Simmonds (18 December 1884 – 29 June  1941)

Jessie was the second daughter of Arthur and Maria and in 1911 was living at home and working as a general servant. She later worked as a housemaid, and in 1939 was at the Doddington Infirmary, North Witchford.  Jessie died in Cambridge aged 56 years old.
