Charles Sippel (1813 – 31 May 1888)

Charles was the son of John Burkhardt and Rebecca Sippel. He was born in Lifford, County Donegal in Ireland but it is believed that he was brought up in Ely. His father was a music teacher, and Charles followed and became a musician and music teacher too. By 1839 Charles was living at 15 New Square and advertising himself as a teacher of music.

He taught briefly in Green Street, before moving to 2 St Mary’s Passage and then 17 Kings Parade where he taught music from at least 1852 – 1875.  From at least 1880 onwards he had a music shop selling instruments and sheet music at 19 Trinity Street. He lived in Cauis Street, just off Mill Road and died there on 31st May 1888.  He left effects of the value of £4,259.

At least two of his children followed him into the music business.  Charles Henry Hayllar Sippel became a music teacher and organist.  Jessie Maria Sippel sold music in Cambridge at 5 All Saints Passage and 6 Pembroke Street.

Sarah Sippel (1816 – 27  July  1853)

Sarah was Charles’ first wife.  She was born in Mildenhall and it is believed they married around 1841.  They had at least  six children, only two of whom survived childhood: Emma (1842-1915), Charles Burckhardt (1844-1845), Sarah Elizabeth (1845-1851), Catherine (1847-1851), Rebecca Ellen (1849-1850) and Christine Jane (1851-1931).  She died on 27th July 1853 and was buried on 1st August aged 37 years old.

Emma Maria Sippel  (née Haynes) (9 January 1833 – 18 February 1869)

Emma Maria was Charles Sippel’s second wife.  She was born in London, to Henry and Mary Ann Haynes.  Henry was a carver and guilder and she was raised at 52 George Street Hampstead.  Her mother died when she was young, and by the time she was 18 she was working as a music teacher and organist. She married Charles Sippel in 1854 in  Wolverhampton.

She had at least eight children with Charles, many of who died in childhood.  Agnes Emily (1855-), Florence Orbell (1856-1934), Charles Henry Hayllar (1859-), Jessie Elizabeth (1860-1860), Jessie Maria (1861-), Walter John Burckhardt (1862-1871), Winifred Martha (1865-) and Edward Alfred Haynes (1867-1868). She died in February 1869 aged 36 years old, leaving Charles a widower for a second time.

Edward Alfred Haynes Sippel (2 January 1867 – 4 March 1868)

Edward was the son of Charles and Emma Maria Sippel.  He was baptised on 17th March 1867 at St Mary the Great.  He died aged 14 months.

Walter John Burckhardt Sippel (14 March 1862 – 4 July 1871)

Walter was the son of Charles and Emma Maria Sippel.  He was baptised on 31st May 1863 at St Mary the Great.  He lived at 17 Kings Parade with his parents and siblings. He died aged 8 years old.

Catherine Sippel (1847 – 27 April 1851)

Catherine was the daughter of Charles and Sarah Sippel.  She was baptised on 7th October 1849 at St Mary the Great.  She died aged 4 years.

Sarah Elizabeth Sippel (1845 – 4 May 1851)

Sarah Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles and Sarah Sippel.  She was baptised on 28th December 1845 at St Mary the Great.  She died aged 6 years old, a few days after her sister Catherine.
