John Slater (1860 – 16 April 1931)

John was born in Dalston, a village just outside Carlisle and was baptised there on 26 August 1860.  He was the son of George and Jane Slater – George was Irish and worked as a domestic coachman. John also became a coachman and married Clara Ridgewell in 1883.  The couple had seven children: Lucy (1886-1947), Annie (1886-), Mary (1887-), Mabel (1888-1978), May (1891), Clara (1894-) and another child who died as an infant.

They lived at 3 Raleigh Pace, Enfield for some time, and all their daughters were born there. By 1901 they had returned to Cambridge and lived at 10 St Clements Place on Park Street.  He died aged 70 years.

Clara Slater (nee Ridgewell) (24 October 1852 – 31 January 1940)

Clara was born in Histon and baptised there on 21 November 1852.  She was the daughter of Frederick and Mary Ridgewell and grew up on Bermuda Row.  Her father was a journeyman gardener, and her mother a needlewoman. After she was widowed she went to live at 23Ashwell Road with her daughter Mabel, who was a factory supervisor.  She died at Ashwell Road aged 87 years.
