James Henry Spencer (7 November 1812 – 18 May 1870)

James was born in Camden. He was baptised at St Giles in the Field Church in Camden on 14th February 1813.  His parents were Thomas and Ann Spencer – Thomas Spencer was a tailor at Rathbone Place near St Pancreas.  He married Mary Hinson in 1840 in Cambridge. By 1851 the couple were living at 120a Fitzroy Street, where James was a tailor employing two men – James Walsham their apprentice tailor was living with them as well as Susan Paine their domestic servant.  James and Elizabeth did not have any children, and he was widowed in 1852 when he was 39 years old.

In 1854 he married Mary’s sister Elizabeth Hinson, and the couple had at least three children: Elizabeth Mary [1856-1875], Henry James [1857-1900] and Charlotte Rebecca [1859-1878].

The business moved to 28 Fitzroy Street and James died there in 1870.

 

Mary Spencer [nee Hinson] (19 May 1815 – 19 December 1852)

Mary was born in Elsworth and baptised there on 6th June 1814. She was the daughter of John and Susanna Hinson.  She married James Henry Spencer in Cambridge when she was 26 years old, and died in 1852.

 

Elizabeth Spencer [nee Hinson] (14 December 1819 – 5 January 1889)

Elizabeth was the sister of Mary Spencer. She was born in Elsworth and baptised there on 29th May 1820.  In 1841 she was living at 47 Gold Street and working as a tailoress with her widowed mother and four siblings. After her sister Mary died in 1852 she married the widower James Henry Spencer.  In 1881 she was living at 127 Fitzroy Street with her son Henry and his wife Louisa.  She died in 1889 aged 69 years old.

 

Elizabeth Mary Spencer (1856 – 29 July 1875)

Elizabeth was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Spencer.  She died aged 19 years old.

 

Charlotte Rebecca Spencer (1859 – 25 November 1878)

Charlotte was Elizabeth Mary’s sister and also died aged 19 years old.
