Francis Spencer (1818 – 31 December 1874)

Francis was born in Catworth, nine miles west of Huntingdon. and was the son of George and Rachel.  He married Elizabeth Maltman in 1843 and the couple had at least eight children: Emma (1845-1924), Kate Eleanor (1847-1888), Frank Maltman 91849-1879), Elizabeth, Ellen (1854-), Louisa (1856-), Jessie (1859-1940) and Alice Lilian (1864-1900). Francis was a printer/compositor and the family lived at 38 James Street (1851) before moving to 1 Botolph Lane (at least 1861 onwards).  Francis ran the Rutland Arms at Botolph Lane and also continued to work as a printer. He died at the Rutland Arms aged 56 years old.

Elizabeth Spencer  (née Maltman) (c.1822 – 10 December 1884)

Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Sarah Maltman.  After she was widowed she ran the Rutland Arms  and lived with daughters Elizabeth, Jessie and Alice (1881).  They moved to live at Hardwicke Street in Newnham Croft and Elizabeth died there aged 62 years old.

Elizabeth Spencer (c.1852 –  8 October 1930)

Elizabeth was the third daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Spencer. in 1871 she was working as a barmaid in Winchester, before returning to live at the Rutland Arms in 1881.   By 1891 she was in London and the census of that year described her as an ‘inmate’ at the St James’s Home for Female Inebriates in Kennington.  The home was certainly contraversial, and it is not known how long Elizabeth remained here.   In 1911 she was living with her sister Jessie and niece Mabel Selby at 32 Newnham Road, Newnham Croft.  She is not noted on the census as having any occupation, however Jessie worked as a ‘fancy draper’ from the house.  She died at  Newnham Road aged 78 years old.
