The headstone, in the parish area of All Saints, is located close to the central path under a large cedar tree. Although the headstone is leaning to the right, it is stable and the inscription is very clear.
‘In Loving Memory of ELIZABETH. Wife of CHARLES STARLING.
Who died Dec. 15. 1872. aged 56 years.’
‘Also of CHARLES STARLING.
Who died Sep.t 6. 1882. aged 61 years.’
“God’s finger touched them and they slept.”
Elizabeth Starling (née Vail) (1816-1872)
Elizabeth was born in Saffron Walden on 16th January 1816. She was the fifth child of William and Ann Vail. Several members of her family are also buried in this cemetery; her mother Ann – grave unknown, her brother John Vail and her nephew William Vail.
Elizabeth was a dressmaker. She married Charles Starling on 6th October 1852. They lived at 6 Wray’s Court, off Sydney Street, Cambridge and had three children: Elizabeth (b 1853), Frederick (b 1856) and Charles (b 1857).
Charles Starling (d 1882)
Charles was born in 1820, the son of Childerstone and Ann Starling. He became a shoemaker like his father. By 1871 he was also the clerk for the parish of All Saints.
