Monument

This headstone within kerb stones, in the parish area of Holy Trinity, is located toward the south-east corner of the cemetery, beside the eastern path as it curves northwards, one row to the east.

Inscription

‘In loving memory of Matilda Ann Stearn
died March 31st 1915 aged 58 years’
‘William Stearn died February 2nd 1941 aged 86 years’

Matilda Ann Stearn (1857‒1915)

Matilda was the daughter of Charles and Ann Carter. She was born in Melbourn in 1857. By 1871 she worked as a dressmaker. In 1878 she married William Stearn, carpenter. The couple were living at 152 Gwydir Street (Petersfield), Cambridge in 1881, and moved subsequently to 21 then 42 Tenison Road and by 1911 at 57 Sidney Street, at which time William was a sanitary inspector and Matilda a lodging house keeper. Matilda died on 31 March 1915 aged 58. The couple had seven children.

William Stearn (d. 1941)

William was the husband of Matilda Ann Stearn. Early in his life he was a carpenter; later he became a sanitary inspector. He died on 2 February 1941 aged 86.
