In Loving Memory of ELIZABETH the beloved wife of PETER STEVENSON
who entered into rest Feb 1st 1895 aged 61
————– STEVENSON remainder indecipherable
Peter Samuel Stevenson is the most likely name to have been inscribed here. The parish burial record records his burial in this parish in 1910.
Elizabeth Stevenson (née Levitt) (1833 – 1895)
Elizabeth was the daughter of Benjamin Levitt and Esther (née Partridge). She was born in Icklington Suffolk. She married Peter Samuel Stevenson on 14 June 1857 at St Andrew the Great, Cambridge. They moved into 35 Burleigh Street, Cambridge where they brought up their three children: Elizabeth Jane (b 1858), Samuel John (b 1863) and Peter Arthur (b 1870). Elizabeth died at the family home.
Peter Samuel Stevenson (1829 – 1910)
Peter was born in Burleigh Street, Cambridge on 21st September 1829 and baptised at the church of St Andrew the Less in May the following year. The son of Samuel Bullock Stevenson and Elizabeth (née Apthorpe). Sadly his father, a labourer, died when he was only 4 years old. He had a younger sister Jane Apthorpe (b 1832). Peter was a tailor and hatter and by 1871 was employing two men and two boys. The family were also able to keep a servant. As the address was now 34 and 35 Burleigh Street, Cambridge it seems likely that these were work premises as well as the family home. In 1878 the Spalding’s Street directory shows that he also had premises in Fitzroy Street.
After the death of Elizabeth he moved to Cherry Hinton Road, Cambridge.
