James Tompkins (13 September 1797 – 3 October 1874)

James was born in Finedon, Northamptonshire and baptised there on 17 September 1797.  He was the son of James and Ann and married Mary Stretch on 11 July 1820 at St. Mary the Great Church. The couple had at least two children Albert James (1832-1890)  and Eliza (1837-1883) and the family lived at Slaughter House Lane (1835) and then at 6 Emmanuel Road (1851 onwards).  James worked as a builder and by 1871 was employing 34 men in his business. He served as an assessor for the St. Andrew’s Ward on the council and died at Emmanuel Street aged 77 years old.

Mary Ann Smith Tompkins (née Stretch) (5 July 1803  – 3 February 1880)

Mary was the daughter of James and Mary Ann (née Smith) Stretch and was baptised on 13 November 1803 at All Saints’ Church. She married James when she was 17 years old  and died at Emmanuel Street.
