Maria Seawell Ward (née Seawell) (1822 – 3 February 1857)
Maria was the daughter of Ellis and Sophia (née Cooke) and sister of Edwin. She grew up at 18 East Road where her father ran a grocery shop and married William Ward in 1844. William was also a grocer and baker and the couple lived at Newmarket Raoad (1851). The couple had five sons: Walter Seawell (1847-1919), William Seawell (1848-1926), Edwin (1850-1875), Francis Mowatt (1852-1873) and Herbert James (1854-1885). Maria died at Newmarket Road aged 35 years old. The notice of her death in the Cambridge Independent Press read ‘much respected and deeply regretted by her relations and friends, after five years’ illness, borne with Christian fortitude, leaving five small children to deplore their loss’.
Francis Mowatt Ward (1852 – 22 November 1873)
Francis was the fourth son of Maria and William Ward and he died aged 21 years old.
Edwin Ward (1850 – 12 December 1875)
Edwin was the third son of Maria and William Ward. In 1871 he was living at 5 Abbey Street and working as a baker along side his father. He died aged 25 years old.
William Ward (c.1823 – 12 February 1878)
William was born in Broughton, Huntingdon and married Maria when he was c.21 years old. After he was widowed he went to live at 5 Abbey Street (1861/1871) and died at 60 Newmarket Road aged 55 years old.
