Samuel George Wheaton (1849 – 17 May 1907)

Samuel was the son of printer Joseph Wheaton and his wife Sophia and brother of Henry William. He grew up on South Street (1861) and then East Road (1871).  Aged 21 he was working as a bookseller and by 1881 was working as a clerk at the Cambridge Gas Company.  He married Phoebe Wesson on 23 August 1881 at Christ’s Church. They lived at Ventnor Villa, Chesterton Road and by 1891 Samuel was described as an accountant at the Cambridge Gas Company.  The couple did not have any children.

Samuel died aged 57 years old of throat cancer.  The Cambridge Independent Press reported that ‘he was well known in the town as an old official of the Gas Company by whom he had been employed for the long period of 36 years. He had filled the position of accountant and carried out the duties of that responsible office with great ability’.  Samuel was a member of the Christ’s Church choir and was also connected with the Good Samartian Society.

Phoebe Wheaton (née Wesson) (11 December 1850 – 24 March 1931)

Phoebe was the daughter of Thomas and Maria (née Briggs) Wesson and grew up at 47 Fitzroy Street where her father ran the Wesson Brewery.  She was baptised on 12 January 1851 at St. Benet’s Church and married Samuel Wheaton when  she was 30 years old. Phoebe’s sister Jane married Samuel’s brother Henry in 1882.

She continued to live at 21 Chesterton Road after she was widowed and in 1911 was living there with her nephew Harold Joseph Weaton (Henry’s son).  She died at Chesterton Road aged 80 years old.
