Relationship – Susan was the mother of Harriet and step mother to Eliza.
Susan Rebecca Cash née Thorpe (1834 – 1920)
Susan, usually known as Rebecca, was born in Brandon Place Cambridge to William and Jane Thorpe. William was a tailor. She was baptised with her brother William John on October 24th 1834 8 months after the death of their father. A note in the register explains that William John was born on 17th November 1830. A baptism in April 1831 suggests he was baptised twice. In 1836 Jane remarried to a John Hall.
We do not know where Jane was in 1841 but in 1851 Rebecca, aged 16, was working as a servant in the Oliver household at 54 Coronation St.
On March 1st 1856 Rebecca married John Smith Carrington in the parish of St Andrew the Less. John was a fireman on the railway. They lived in East Road where John died in May that same year leaving Rebecca pregnant. The baby, a boy, was baptised in March 1857 and named after his father, sadly he died in 1864 aged 7.
Rebecca supported herself by working as a laundress until she met and married shoemaker George Cash in 1858.
George was a widower from Lakenheath and came with a ready made family of 3 Sarah1851), Edwin (1853) and Eliza (1854). Jane and George went on to have 5 more children Mary (1860), Harriet (1863), Emily (1866-1881), George (1868) and Charles (1871).
They lived at 32 Prospect Row for the next 40 years. By 1881 George had given up shoemaking and become a cow keeper. Their son George took over as shoemaker and remained in the house until his death in 1905. Their daughter Harriet married their landlord, Theodore Tingey Flinders, who lived next door at no.31.
Eliza Holder (1853 – 1938)
Eliza was the daughter of George & Sarah Cash. She was born in Lakenheath and came to Cambridge with her father and siblings after the death of her mother
She married Joseph Holder a miner from South Heighton, Sussex
Harriett Flinders (1864 – 1941)
Harriet was born to George & Susan Rebecca Cash at 32 prospect Row. She married Theodore Alexander Tingey Flinders on August 12th 1889. Theodore was a print compositor at the Cambridge University Press. He also owned no 31 and 32 Prospect Row so Harriet really did marry the boy next door.
