Mary Ann Collins (née Harding)  (c.1859 – 6 June  1913)

Mary was born in Burwell and baptised there on 27 May 1860.  She grew up in the village with her parents agricultural labourer George and Elizabeth.  Mary married Thomas Collins in Burwell in 1879 and they had nine children: Lillie Elizabeth (1881-1972), Arthur Thomas (1884-1917), Rosa Alice (1885-1955), Lance-Corporal George William (1888-1918), Percy Elijah (1890-1953), Bertie (1893-1973), William (1898-), Albert Edward (1901-1983) and one further child who died as an infant.

Thomas Collins was an agricultural labourer when they married and they started married life in Trumpington (1881) but from at least 1891 onwards he was the farm bailiff of Pole Cat Farm, 26 Romsey Terrace.  The property was sold in 1919 and was described as a ‘six roomed cottage, barn, stabling, cow lodge, piggeries, cart lodge, fowl houses, two small paddocks and large pleasure garden, well planted with choice fruit trees and having thereon 2 large greenhouses and a 2-roomed summer house’.

Mary died at Pole Cat Farm, Romsey Terrace and her funeral took place on 10 June. It is not known what happened to her husband Thomas after her death.

[Pole Cat farm can be found on old maps of the Mill Road area, more can be read here]
