Thomas Cornell (1863 – 11 June 1924)
Thomas was born in Saffron Walden and baptised at St. Mary the Virgin Church on 8 May 1864. He was the youngest son of William and Susan Cornell and his father was a journeyman bricklayer. Thomas worked for the railway as a porter (1881) and later as a carman (delivery driver). In 1881 he was lodging with Samuel and Sarah Brown at 1 St. Matthew’s Buildings, Herbert Street, Cambridge. He married Harriett in 1894 and they lived at 33 Thoday Street (1901) and 7 Stockwell Street (at least 1911 onwards). Thomas died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and his funeral took place on 16 June 1924.
Harriett Cornell (née Flavell) (11 March 1862 – 30 July 1940)
Harriet was born and raised in Haddenham, a village south west of Ely. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth and her father was an agricultural labourer. Aged 19 she was documented as being an unemployed domestic servant (1881) and was living at home with her widowed mother in 1891, still working in service. Harriett continued to live at 7 Stockwell Street after she was widowed and died at Chesterton Hospital.
