Arthur Johnson (1877 – 10 November 1917)
Arthur was the son of Thomas and Esther Johnson and grew up on South Street. His father was a stone mason and by the age of 13 Arthur was working as an errand boy (1891). He later worked as a carpenter (1901) and then cab (carriage) proprietor (by at least 1911). He married Martha Summerfield in 1905 and they had one son: Arthur Henry. The couple lived at 108 York Street and it is known that Arthur served as a special constable for the town (1907).
Arthur died after what newspapers described as ‘a long and painful illness’. He was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 13 November and six fellow cabmen acted as bearers. Martha’s wreath read ‘In memory of my dear husband – one of the best – from his sorrowing wife’. He was 40 years old.
