He was the son of butcher Josiah Goodman and his wife Sarah (née Lawman).  From the age of 17 George was working as a butcher and worked with his father (1881/1891). By 1900 however he had moved to work at Eastman & Co butchers, Cambridge and was lodging at 25 Park Street with retired dressmaker Mary Ann Bunten.  He married Mary Ann Bradford (1874-1966) in 1902 and the couple had at least three children:  Mary Brenda (1905-1994), Jack Bradford (1908-1987) and Kathleen Florence (1911-2002).  They lived at 35 Trumpington Street, and George died there at the age of 63 years.
