William Crabb Hall, JP (1837-98)
William, the son of John and Mary Hall, born 5 December 1837 and baptised 5 July 1838 at St Botolph’s Church, was a bookseller, publisher and printer at 51 Trumpington Street, Cambridge for at least the period 1861‒91.

He married Charlotte Martha Fuller on 13 August 1862, at All Saints Church, Cambridge. The couple had at least six children: Maude Mary (b. 1864, who married Ernest Alfred Jones on 4 June 1890), Ethel Charlotte Fuller (1865-91), Percy John (b. 1867), Gilbert Montague (b. 1868), Arthur Cecil (b. 1870), and Florence Emily (b. 1872, who married Francis Valentine Heath on 8 September 1896).

Spalding’s Street Directory for 1881 lists him five times:

– 51 [Trumpington St] Hall & Sons, booksellers, publishers, stationers & printers
– 1&2 [Pembroke St] Hall, William Crabb
– 4 [Mill Lane] Taylor, Henry / Hall & Son’s printing office
– [Booksellers and Stationers] Hall & Sons, 51, Trumpington-street
– as a churchwarden of St Botolph’s church.

Evidently his shop (the census report for that year credits him with ’employing seven men and two boys’) was the first on Trumpington Street north of Pembroke Street and his residence lay behind it, the first on Pembroke Street. The printing office at 4 Mill Lane had existed since at least as early as 1874 and still existed in 1887, possibly later.

By 1891, the family was living at “Elmhurst”, Brooklands Avenue . He was buried on 8 June 1898.
