Frederick Hoppett (c.1821 – 28 May 1872)
Frederick was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hoppett and was born in Cambridge. He was baptised at St Mary the Less Church on 16th December 1821. He married Eliza Farmer at St George’s Church, Hanover Square in London in 1853 when he was 31 years old.
Frederick and Eliza had at least seven children: Frederick William [1846-], Edward Arthur [1854-1907], William Braddle Montgomery [1855-1929], John Frederick Albert [1858-1887], Eliza Mary Florence [1861-1936], Alexandra Sophia [1864-1866] and Alice Edith [1867-1954]. Frederick William Hoppett was born in 1846 and was marked as being a son on the 1861 census, so he could have been born before the marriage, or else was a relative that was described as a son.
Frederick was a printseller and frame maker and the family lived at 5 St John’s Street and then at 1 Rose Crescent [at least 1871 onwards]. Newspaper adverts of the time describe him as a ‘printseller, stationer, carver and guilder’ and he seems to have offered ‘a large collection of fine engravings by Landseer, Herring and other artists at less than a quarter of the publishing price. Prints framed and glazed in the most tasteful manner at extremely low prices. Stereoscopic views and photographs in great variety’. He died aged 50 years old in 1872.
Eliza Hoppett [nee Farmer] (20 April 1829 – 4 June 1900)
Eliza was the daughter of shoemaker Samuel Farmer and his wife Ann. She was born in London and baptised at St Botolph without Bishopsgate on 3rd June 1829. She married Frederick Hoppett when she was 24 years old.
After being widowed she took over the running of the business at 1 Rose Crescent with her son Edward Arthur. She died in June 1900 aged 71 years old.
Edward Arthur Hoppett (16 September 1854 – 11 October 1907)
Edward was the second son of Frederick and Eliza. He was baptised on 24th December 1854 at St Sepulchre Church, Cambridge. After the death of his father he took over the running of the printselling business at 1 Rose Crescent with his mother Eliza, and ran it alone after her death.
He sat on the Board of Guardians for the Mill Road Workhouse. He did not marry, and died in Southwark in London in October 1907 aged 53 years old. He was still running the business in Cambridge at the time of his death.
Alice Edith Metcalfe [nee Hoppett] (1 August 1867 – 15 June 1952)
Alice was the youngest daughter of Frederick and Eliza Hoppett. She was raised at 1 Rose Crescent. She married Francis Gatward Metcalfe [1870-1946] at St Michael’s Church on 6th November 1892. Alice and Francis had two daughters: Frances Edith Mary [1894-1975] and Alice Victoria [1897-1978].
Francis Metcalfe worked as a print and stationary assistant and the family lived at 44 Montague Road [1901/1911] and then later at 29 Milton Road. She was widowed aged 78 years old, and died at Milton Road in 1952 aged 84 years old.
Alexandra Sophia Hoppett (1864 – 3 June 1866)
Alexandra was born in early 1864. She was baptised on 25th June 1865, but died at Rose Crescent in June 1866 aged 2 years.
John Frederick Albert Hoppett (22 December 1858 – 1887)
John was the youngest son of Frederick and Eliza Hoppett. He was raised at St John’s Street and then Rose Crescent. He was baptised on 22nd June 1862 when he was 3 years old. He died aged 28 years old.
