Herbert was born in 1897 in Kinsale, Ireland to Herbert Dick Howell (1872-1936) and Louisa Ann Howell (née Wass) (1865-1935).  He was known as Bill. Herbert enlisted as Sergeant 12017, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.  He was killed in France on 20 July 1916 and was commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.  As well as being commemorated on this family grave he was also commemorated in Cambridge on the war memorial at St John’s and on the Cambridge Guildhall War Memorial.
