George Meiklejohn (c. June 1880 – 23 November 1920)

George was born in Swanscombe, Kent and was the son of George and Sarah. Aged 20 he was living in Strood and working as a general labourer, before moving to Cambridge where he married Gertrude Irwin in 1910. They lived at 34 Covent Garden and had at least two children: Eileen (1914-1996) and Ronald George (1921-1961). George worked as a platelayer on the railway and died in an accident at work aged 40 years old.  The Cambridge Daily News reported that he ‘was engaged for the afternoon unloading wood in the goods yard, when he became pinned between two trucks during shunting operations, sustaining such terrible injuries that he died before he could be removed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital’.

Gertrude Alice Meiklejohn (née Irwin) (5 January 1879 – 2 August  1953)

Gertrude was the daughter of cab driver/carriage driver Robert Irwin and his wife Charlotte (née Carter). She grew up at 4 St Anthony’s Street and married George Meiklejohn when she was 31 years old. After she was widowed she continued to live at Covent Garden until c.1936 and then lived at 6 Guest Road.
