James Miles (1842 – 4 March 1902)
James was born in the village of Motcombe, two miles north of Shaftesbury and was baptised there on 7 August 1842. He was the son of Edwin and Sarah and his father was a market gardener in Motcombe. James trained as a carpenter and in 1871 was lodging at 34 Eden Street, Cambridge. He worked for Great Eastern Railway (G.E.R.) from c.1872 onwards. He married widow Sarah Hodgkinson in 1873 and they had at least two children: Cordelia Ellen (1874-1946) and Edwin Robert (1876-). The family lived at 22 Kingston Street (1881-at least 1891) and 82 Tenison Road.
James was foreman of the waggon and carriage department of G.E.R. and died in a work related accident. Whilst carriages were being shunted he was crushed between two buffers. He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by ambulance, but was declared dead on arrival. An inquest returned a verdict of accidental death. His funeral was held on 8 May at Mill Road Cemetery where ‘a number of sympathisers attended. The mourners were followed by Cambridge G.E.R. officials and employees and the coffin was born by employees of the department with which deceased was connected’.
Sarah Louisa Priscilla Miles (1836 – 14 February 1919)
Sarah was born in Witherley, near Hinckley in Leicestershire and baptised there on 23 September 1836. She was the daughter of Robert and Martha and grew up in the Witherley where her father was a huntsman and later ran the Blue Lion pub. Sarah married Benjamin Haywood Hodgkinson in Sheffield in 1860 and they had at least three children: Caroline Jane (1861-), Annie Thurlow (1864-1960) and Minnie Thurlow (1865-1946). Benjamin was a gas rent collector who died in March 1864 in Sheffield leaving Sarah with two small children and pregnant with a third. She worked as a school teacher and moved to Cambridge, living at 29 Eden Street before marrying James Miles who lived a few doors away. After she was widowed for a second time Sarah lived at Tension Road with lodger Kathleen Ridley (1911). She died at home aged 82 years old.
