This headstone with kerb stones is located in the parish of Holy Trinity a few rows to the west of the east path, in the shade of a large tree. The inscriptions of metal letters are in good order.


In Loving Memory of LOUISA POWELL beloved wife of T. C. POWELL who passed over Dec 20th 1917 aged 53 

Also ARTHUR LAWRENCE son died Oct. 14th 1911 aged 3 

And ELSIE ROSE daughter died Oct. 28th 1924 aged 28

Louisa Powell (née Stocker) (1864 – 20 December 1917)

Louisa was the daughter of James and Mary Ann Stocker, sister of James and grew up at 12 Broad Street. Her father worked as a coachsmith and aged 16 Louisa was working as a housemaid at the East of England Girls’ School in Bishop Stortford. She married Theophilus Charles Powell (1864-1943) in 1889 and they had seven children; Edith Mary (1890-1943), Ellen Louisa (Nellie) (1891-1959), Frank Charles (1894-1963), Elsie Rose (1896-1924), James Stocker (1898-1981), Benjamin John Armiger (1904-1998) and Arthur Lawrence (1908-1911). Theophilus was a carpenter/joiner  and the family lived at Charles Street (1891), 78 Argyle Street (1901) and 70 Thoday Street (1911). Louisa died at home aged 53 years old and her funeral took place on 27 December.

Arthur Lawrence Powell (1908 – 14 October 1911)

Arthur was the youngest son of Theophilus and Louisa and died aged 3 years old.

Elsie Rose Powell (1896 – 28 October  1924)

Elsie was the third daughter of Theophilus and Louisa. In 1911 she was living at Thoday Street and working as a domestic under-nurse. She died at Thoday Street aged 28 years old.

Maria Powell (née Beaumont) (1871 – 10 August 1935)

Maria was Theophilus’s second wife. Little is known of her early life, but she was born in Cambridge and in 1901 she was living at 15 Park Terrace and working as a housemaid for widow Mary Phelps. In 1911 she was working as a servant at a Home for Nurses, located at Fitzwilliam Street, before marrying widower Theophilus Powell in 1919.  Maria died at 9 Broad Street aged 63 years old.

Theophilus died in Woodford Green Essex in January 1945 and is thought to have been buried  in Essex.
