Mary Rose (née Cross) (1882 – 28 February 1929)

Mary with her two eldest daughters (Ethel and Agnes)

Mary was born in Lakenheath and was the daughter of agricultural labourer Robert Cross and Elizabeth (née Feetham). She came to Cambridge and worked as a housemaid – although in 1901 when the census was taken she was a patient at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. She married Ernest Samuel Rose(1882-1958) on 20 October 1904 and they had four children: Ethel Mary Charlotte (1905-1998), Agnes Ruth (1913-1979), Edna (1914-1914) and Freda Joyce (1920-1997). They lived at 18 York Street, where Ernest was a greengrocer.  Mary died at home aged 47 years old and her funeral took place on 28 February.

Ernest married for a second time in 1932 to widow Ethel Maud Grace Jacobs (née Hunt) (1884-1962). Ethel’s first husband Percy Harry Jacobs had died in 1928. They continued to live at 18 York Street, and he died in February 1958 aged 75 years old.
