“At Rest”

William Leighton Scales (1853 – September 1919)

William Leighton Scales was the son of George Scales (1834-1904) and his first wife Emma Lusher (1835 – 1857).  He was born in 1853 in Ely.  His mother died when he was 4 years old.  In 1861 aged 8 he lived in the Willow Tree Pub, Willow Walk with his father and step mother Hannah Scales (1833-1886) . Aged 18 in 1871 he was living with his step-siblings in King Street and working as a grocery assistant.  He married Agnes Mary Brook  in January 1876 in Ipswich.  He lived in Ipswich until Agnes died aged just 30 in April 1883.  They had one son – George William Brook Scales (1877 – 1929). George William seems to have lived with various family members after the death of his mother, and ended up living in Cardiff.  In 1898 aged 45 William Leighton was back in Cambridge, and  re-married to Ellen Hemmings.  They had four children John Farney (1899 – 1966), Marcus Hemming (1900-1967), Ellen Elizabeth (1901 – 1977) and Basil Alfred Leighton (1906 – 1951).  In 1901 the family was living at 16 Corn Exchange Street with one servant – William Leighton was ‘living on own means’.  In 1911 they were living at 41 Cyprus Road.  He died in September 1919 aged 66.

Ellen Scales née Hemming (6th January 1861 – 5th October 1927)

Ellen was born on 6th January 1861 in Shrewsbury.  Her father was a butler, and  she was mainly brought up by her aunt and uncle in Cambridge. She married William Leighton in 1898 when she was 37.  They had 3 sons, and 1 daughter together. She died on 5th October 1927.
