In 1861 aged 8 he lived in the Willow Tree Pub, Willow Walk with his father and step mother Hannah Scales (1833-1886) . Aged 18 in 1871 he was living with his step-siblings in King Street and working as a grocery assistant. He married Agnes Mary Brook in January 1876 in Ipswich. He lived in Ipswich until Agnes died aged just 30 in April 1883. They had one son – George William Brook Scales (1877 – 1929). In 1898 aged 45 William Leighton was back in Cambridge, and re-married to Ellen Hemmings. They had four children John Farney (1899 – 1966), Marcus Hemming (1900-1967), Ellen Elizabeth (1901 – 1977) and Basil Alfred Leighton (1906 – 1951). In 1901 the family was living at 16 Corn Exchange Street with one servant – William Leighton was ‘living on own means’. In 1911 they were living at 41 Cyprus Road. He died in September 1919 aged 66.
