Walter Charles Smoothy (28 January 1869 – 13 June 1944)

Walter was the son of Charles and Mary (née Taylor) Smoothy, and brother of William.  He grew up at 13 King Street where his father was a greengrocer. Walter started working for the Post Office as a postman in April 1889 and married Laura Lott in 1899 –  the couple did not have any children. They lived at 3 Jesus Terrace, New Square and Walter worked as a postman/letter carrier. He was widowed in 1937 and in 1939 was living at Jesus Terrace with housekeeper Eliza Haynes.  He died at home aged 75 years old.

Laura Smoothy (née Lett) (1864 – 22 July 1937)

Laura was the daughter of Emanuel and Ann Lett, and was baptised at St. Botolph’s Church on 30 October 1864.  She grew up at Anderson’s Court, Newnham Road, and her father worked as a groom.  Age 27 (1891) she was working as a housemaid at 12 Parkside along side her sister Charlotte.   She married aged 35 and died in 1937.
