John was the son of John and Elizabeth (née Dent) Traylen and was born in Peterborough. The family later moved to Cambridge where his father ran a grocery store at 12 Prospect Row (at least 1891 onwards). John married Emma Watson on 14 April 1900 and they went to live at Marshall Road (1901) and then 93 Fitzroy Street (1911). John worked as an engineer’s fitter/plumber for local company Laurie and McConnal Ltd. He signed up to serve in the 1st World War in October 1916.
John died at Fitzroy Street after ‘a brief illness’ and the funeral took place on 19 February. The coffin was carried to the graveside by four of his fellow employees.
