Arthur William Wheat (19 January 1872 – 3 April 1926)

Arthur was the son of Matthew and Eliza Wheat.  He was born in Wisbech, and baptised at St Peter’s Church in Wisbech on 12th May 1872. His father was a farmers foreman, and later farm bailiff.  Arthur grew up in Lincolnshire – in Whaplode [1881] and then at Gosberton [1891].  Aged 19 years old he was working as a grocers assistant.

He married Mary Elizabeth Challess  in 1899. In 1901 Arthur and Mary were living in Beverley in Yorkshire, and Arthur was working as a grocer’s assistant.  By 1911 they had moved to Newnham in Cambridge, and Arthur had a grocery shop.  He died in April 1926 aged 54 years old at 31 Collier Road.  He left an estate valued at £1,1,97 12s and 7d.

Mary and Arthur did not have any children, and after his death she continued to live in Cambridge with her brother Charles Challess at 118 Tenison Road [1939].  She died in 1956 in Brandon in Suffolk aged 88 years old.
