George Harry Wright (1869 – 13 December 1915)
George was born in Stowmarket, but grew up in Colchester from the age of 8 years old onwards. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Wright and his father worked as an iron furnace engineer. George trained as a stonemason and married Caroline Simpson on 3 October 1892 at St Andrew’s Church, Colchester. The couple had six children: Ivy Grace (1894-1965), Frederick George (1895-1970), Leslie Rowland (1900-1957), Kathleen Emily (1904-1985), William Bertie (1906-2003) and Constance Eveline (1908-). When the census of 1901 was taken George was working at Elveden Hall, Eleveden, Suffolk and living at the ‘Mason’s barracks’ with at least fourteen other stonemasons. George and Caroline’s first three children were born in Colcesther, but they had moved to live at 18 Romsey Terrace, Cambridge by 1904 when daughter Kathleen was born.
George died aged 46 years old and his funeral took place at the Romsey Town Weleyan Chapel on 17 December 1915. The Cambridge Independent Press reported ‘the late Mr. Wright was well known in Cambridge, he having been prominently connected with the Romsey Town Wesleyan chapel. He was well konw among the trade unions. Himself a stonemason, there were some of his fellow tradesmen at the graveside…after the reading of the first portion of the service, the hymn ‘Abide with me’ which was the last one Mr Wright sang just before he passed away, was sung’.
Caroline Grace Wright (née Simpson) (5 September 1873 – 2 October 1947)
Caroline was born in Colchester and was the youngest child of Thomas and Caroline (née Springett). Her mother died when Caroline was 3 years old, and she grew up in Colchester with her widowed father and three siblings. Thomas Simpson worked as a corn merchant’s shopman/assistant and Caroline married George Wright soon after her 19th birthday. In 1939 she was runing a lodging house from 15 Mill Road and living with daughters Kathleen and Constance. Caroline died at home aged 74 years old.
