Mary Symonds [nee Marsh] (c.1819 – 3 January 1904)

Mary was born in Ely and married Thomas Jonathan Symonds at St Martins in the Field on 25th February 1847 when she was 27 years old.  They had at least four sons: James Thomas [1848-1848], Thomas Jonathan [1849-1892], Nathaniel Henry Fish [1951-1928] and John Fish [1854-1936].

Thomas Symonds was a surgeon and they lived at 6 Petersfield [1861]. By 1871 she was a widow and living at 16 Trumpington Street with her youngest two sons, a servant and a boarder. By 1881 she was at 9 Benet Street living with Nathaniel, a servant and a lodger.

She died at 9 Benet Street in early January 1904 aged 84 years old.

 

Nathaniel Henry Fish Symonds (23 March 1851 – 30 November 1928)

Nathaniel was born in Cambridge, and baptised at St Martin in the Fields on 28th April 1851.  He was the third son of Thomas and Mary Symonds. He appears on census records as an undergraduate at Cambridge University though it is not known where he studied.

He married Louise Barber in 1886 when he was 35 years old. In 1891 the couple were living at 6 Downing Terrace, and Nathaniel was working as a marriage registrar.  In 1901 they were still at Downing Terrace and he was working as a solicitors managing clerk.  Louse died at 51 Lensfield Terrace in 1905 aged 45 years old.

He continued to live at 51 Lensfield Road with his mother-in-law [1911] and is shown on the census of that year as a law clerk.  He died at Lensfield Road in 1928 aged 77 years old.

 

Maria Barber [nee Barrow]  (25 August 1830 – 25 January 1933)

Maria was the daughter of college servant John Barrow and his wife Mary Ann. She was born in Cambridge and grew up on Rose Crescent [1851]. She married Robert Samuel Barber in 1855 and they moved to Hackney where Robert was a warehouseman [1861]. They had one daughter – Louise Maria Gertrude [1860-1905].  Robert died in early 1865 leaving Maria a widow.

She moved back to Cambridge and lived with her father  John at 6 Downing Terrace. John was a widow by this time and had become a coal merchant, and Maria worked as a music teacher. When Louise married Nathaniel Symonds, Maria lived with them at 6 Downing Terrace [1891 and 1901]. Louise died in 1905 at 51 Lensfield Road.

Maria and Nathaniel continued to live at 51 Lensfield Road [1911] when she was 80 and he was 60 years old. Nathaniel died in 1928 at Lensfield Road and Maria died there in 1933 aged a very impressive 102 years old.
