The cemetery lies on a old, flat river-terrace, composed of mainly chalky gravels and sand, providing light and well-drained soils of a neutral or slightly calcareous nature.

The ground slopes gradually down from the SE to the NW end, where the path descends sharply to an old river channel in Norfolk Street, which runs through the ARU site, around the Blossom Street area and forms the depression where the flats flank East Road.

There is little evidence that large-scale cultivation ever took place on the site; it appears to have been rough pasture or fallow for much of its time prior to being consecrated as a cemetery.
