Inscription

Joseph John Beard (8 April 1851 – 18 July 1935)

Joseph was born in Barton and was the son of John and Mary. He grew up on Church Lane in Barton and by the age of 10 was working as an agricultural labourer alongside his father and brothers.  In 1871 he was working as a coprolite digger with elder brothers Samuel and Joseph and living with his by then widowed mother. He married Susan Barton in 1880 and they went to live at 9 York Terrace and Joseph worked as a railway porter and army reservist (1881).  The couple had nine children: Lily Annie (1882-1978), Bob (1883-), John Barton (1885-1965), Arthur (1889-), David (1890-), Edith (1892-1959), Dennis Barton (1894-1969), Rev. Ernest Barton (1896-1966) and Percy Leslie (1900-1953). He later worked as a railway signalman (at least 1891 onwards) and the family eventually settled at Ainsworth Street (1901 onwards).

Susan Beard  (née Barton) (14 November 1860 – 10 February 1954)

Susan was also born in Barton and was the daughter of agricultural labourer Stidman Barton and Sarah (née Osborne).  After Joseph’s death she continued to live at 77 Ainsworth Street with daughter Edith and died at home aged 93 years old.
