Alfred Samuel Fromant (1844 – 16 June 1931)
Alfred was born in Cambridge and baptised on 24th November 1844. He was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Fromant. His father died when he was a year old, and he appears to have been raised by his grandparents Robert and Mary Bradford at 26 Burleigh Street. By 1861 he was a tailor, and living with his grandparents.
He married Sarah Ann Metcalfe in 1865 when he was 21 years old. Together they had five children: Elizabeth Alice [1866-1941], Eleanor Nelly Metcalfe [1869-1945], Louise Bradford [1870-1944], Maude Annie [1872-1954] and Alfred John Metcalfe [1875-1876]. The family lived at 4 Park Street and then at 12 Park Street [1881/1891].
In 1871 Alfred had changed career and was a ‘valet de chambre’, but from at least 1881 onwards he worked for the university as a college servant. Alfred and Sarah moved to Mawson Road [1901 onwards]. He was retired and living off a pension at 71 Mawson Road with Sarah in 1911. He was widowed in 1923, and died at 87 years old at Addenbrookes Hopsital in 1931.
Sarah Ann Fromant [nee Metcalfe] (1843 – 24 April 1923)
Sarah was born in Cambridge and was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Metcalfe. John Metcalfe worked as a college servant, and she grew up at 3 Brandon Row. She married Alfred Fromant when she was 22 years old. She raised their five children, but on the 1881 census is also recorded as a college servant, so she must have worked at the University during her lifetime. She died at 71 Mawson Road at the age of 80 years old.
Eleanor Nelly Metcalfe Fromant (24 May 1869 – 1 February 1945)
Eleanor was the second child of Alfred and Sarah Fromant. She grew up at 4 Park Street and then 12 Park Street . Aged 22 she was working as a housemaid in Kensington . She appears in the 1913 Cambridge Street and General Directory as a nurse, and living at 71 Mawson Road with her parents.
From 1930-1938 she is recorded as living at 125 Mawson Road. In 1939 she was living with the Harrison family at 73 Mawson Road and her occupation is described as a retired nurse. She died at 57 Montague Road in Cambridge aged 75 years old.
Alfred John Metcalfe (13 November 1875 – 10 February 1876)
Alfred was the only son of Alfred and Sarah Fromant. He died aged 13 weeks at 4 Park Street.
Alice Elizabeth Berridge[nee Fromant] (15 September 1866 – 23 May 1941)
Alice was the eldest child of Alfred and Sarah. She was born Elizabeth Alice, but appears to have inverted her names in later life. She married George Berridge in 1892 when she was 26 years old. Together they lived in Friern Barnet and then Wood Green . George worked as a joiner, and the couple did not have any children.
They were still living in Freirn Barnet in 1938, but had moved to Hoddeston in Hertfordshire by 1939. Alice died at the County Hospital in Hertford in May 1941 when she was 74 years old. At the time she was living at 2 Macers Cottages, Spitalbrook Hill in Broxbourne.
George Berridge (3 March 1861 – 21 July 1941)
George was born in Oundle and was the son of Henry and Maria Berridge. Henry Berridge was a carpenter, and George followed in his footsteps and also became a carpenter by the time he was 20 years old. He was living in Oundle with his widowed mother in 1891, the year before his marriage to Alice Fromant in Cambridge. He died nine weeks after his wife at the Western House Hospital in Ware.
