William Hunt (1839 – 3 December 1905)
William was born in Cambridge and worked at Christ’s College for most of his life. He was butler at the college from at least 1861 onwards, where his future wife was a housemaid. The couple married in 1883 and had one son: William James (1885-1918). The couple moved from living at the college to 11 Christ’s Lane, and in 1891 William was documented as being a college shoeblack. He died at home aged 66 years old.
Mary Hunt (c.1810 – 7 February 1898)
Mary was born in Barrington, but little is known of her early life, except that her son William was born in Cambridge in 1839. She worked as a cook for the Balls family, who lived at 2 Camden Place (1861), and was then cook for the Gilly family at 15 Trumpington Road (1871). In 1881 she was living at 3a Orchard Street and was described as an annuitant, but later moved to live with William and Ann at Christ’s Lane (at least 1891 onwards). She died at home aged 87 years old.
Ann Hunt (née Conder) (1841 – 10 February 1923)
Ann was born in Barrington, the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (née Hunt) Conder, and was perhaps a cousin of her future husband. She worked as a housemaid for the Master of Christ’s College before marrying William Hunt. In 1911 she was living at 35 Earl Street with her son William, who was a grocer’s assistant and her sister Sarah. She died in Cambridge aged 81 years old.
William James Hunt (1885-1918) – WW1 soldier – see also Life Story page
William James Hunt was born in 1885 to William Hunt and Ann Hunt (nee Condor.) His battalion went to France in 1915, though it is not clear when he enlisted. He died on the Western Front from shell fire on September 18, 1918.
