Monument A few rows from the west wall towards the north of the parish. In good order but ivy is growing over one end.

Richard Constantine Barker (12 March 1824 – 20 February 1891)

Richard was born in Plymouth and was the son of John and Elizabeth Barker. He was baptise at the Unitarian Presbyterian Chapel in Plymouth in November 1824.He married Sophia Johnson in Cambridge in 1846.  They had one daughter: Alice Elizabeth Brown [1846-1912].

In 1851 Richard and Sophia were living at 42 Fitzroy Street with her parents.  He was working as a police constable, working from the Chesterton station.  By 1861 he was living at the Police Station at St Neots – also present on the census return at the address is 16 year old prisoner Harriet Hall!

In 1871 Richard and Sophia were living at the Police Station at Yaxley, where he was ‘Superintendant of Police’ [sic]. Ten years later [1881] they were back living in Cambridge at 10 East Road, where he was described as ‘superannuated police officer [superintendent of the Police]. He died at East Road in 1891 aged 66 years old.

 

Sophia Barker [nee Johnson]  (c.1825 – 21 February 1915)

Sophia was the daughter of John and Sophia Johnson and was born in Cambridge.  Aged 16 she was working as a servant in Soham.  She married Richard Barker in 1846.  She moved around various police stations in connection with Richard’s role as Police Superintendent.  After being widowed she continued to live at 10 East Road, and was living there in April 1891 with her cousin as a companion and a domestic servant.  By 1901 she was moved to 23 Glisson Road, and was still living there in 1911.  She died at Glisson Road aged 90 years old.
