This Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone, in the parish area of St Andrew the Great, is located halfway along the path that leads from the western path to the centre circle, three graves to the south side of that path.

Thomas Barton (1889-1916)
Private (3397) in ‘B’ Company, the 1st Battalion the Cambridgeshire Regiment, died on 6 December 1916, aged 27, of wounds sustained in action. He is also commemorated on the Cambridge Guildhall War Memorial.
Thomas was born in 1889 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. He was the youngest of four children born to George Barton and Elizabeth Jane Barton (née Fordham). His father was a boot maker. The family grew up in Vinery Road (Romsey Town) and then 214 Mill Road where George Barton worked from home. On the night of the 1911 census Thomas was a visitor in the household of the Richardson family at 78 Walnut Tree Avenue, Newmarket Road, Cambridge. At that time he was working as a kitchen porter for a College as was Sidney Frank Richardson, the son of the household. Thomas went on to marry Gertrude Ellen Richardson, who was Sidney’s younger sister, in 1913 in Cambridge. The couple lived at 145 Stanley Road, Cambridge.
Thomas enlisted in Cambridge as Private (3397) in B Company, the 1st Battalion, the Cambridgeshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 6 December 1916 in Devonport Military Hospital, Plymouth, Devon, and was buried in Mill Road Cemetery on 9 December. Thomas was entitled to the Victory medal and the British War medal. He is commemorated on the Cambridge Guildhall War Memorial.
