Elizabeth Jane Barton (née Fordham) (1861 – 1 October 1921)
Elizabeth was born in the village of Hadstock, nine miles south of Cambridge and baptised there on Christmas Day 1861. She was the daughter of agricultural labourer Thomas (1836-1919) and Pheobe (née Cottage) (1836-1866). Elizabeth worked as a servant for cook Alfred Fuller who lived at 9 Brunswick Walk, before marrying shoemaker George Barton in 1882. The couple had four children: George Henry (1882-1954), Ellen Elizabeth (1884-1976), Lily Maud (1887-1962) and Thomas (1890-1916). They lived at 4 Vinery Road (1891) and then 214 Mill Road where George had a shoe shop (at least 1901 onwards).
Elizabeth died at 214 Mill Road aged 60 years old and her funeral was held on 4 October ‘in the presence of a large number of sympathisers’. George left a wreath at the graveside which read ‘in ever-loving memory of my dear wife, from her ever-loving husband ‘nearer my God, to Thee’.
George Barton (1861 – 28 April 1926)
George was the son of midwife Harriet Barton (1826-), and his father died when he was a child. He grew up at 5 John Street (1871) and 128 Sturton Street (1881). By the age of 19 he was working as a bootmaker and died in Cambridge aged 65 years old.
Roy Victor Westover Howard (c.1914 – 21 February 1915)
Roy was the son of George Charles Howard (1877-1960) and Ellen Elizabeth (née Barton). George was a draper’s clerk and the couple had married in 1906. They lived at 4 Earl Street and had three other children, with Roy being the youngest. He died at home aged 12 months old and his funeral was held on 26 February at Mill Road Cemetery. The coffin was inscribed ‘Roy Victor Westover Howard, died Feb. 21st, 1915, aged 12 months’, which is at odds with the grave monument date. The Cambridge Independent Press reported ‘Beautiful floral tributes were sent fom: His daddy and mummy, in loving memory of our darling little Roy; To our darling little brother, from Joan, Reggie and Doddie’.
