Monument
This broken cross on a 3 and 3 tier plinth within kerbstones lie 3 rows from the west wall. Thecarved inscription is still legible in parts. This area is normally left to grow wild but was cleared as part of the management plan in the winter of 2022.

And LILIAN ANN SMEE their daughter died June 11th 1955 aged 82
Alfred Smee (1844 – 3 January 1864)
Alfred was the son of Charles Smee and his first wife Mary. He grew up with his father and step mother Rebecca at 10 Albert Street (1851) and Cromwell Road, Croydon (1861). Charles Smee worked as a lamplighter, and by the age of 17 Alfred was working as a railway porter in Croydon. He married Mary Ann Bennett on 28 July 1869 in Cambridge and they had at least four children: Sidney Charles (1870-1924), Lilian Ann, Mabel Marie Rebecca (1874-1962) and Alfred Percival (1877-1961).
In 1871 the family were living with Mary’s parents at 102 Fitzroy Street and Alfred was working as a carpenter (employing 2 men). They moved to 172 Sturton Street (1881), 6 Brunswick Place (1891) and then 65 Jesus Lane (1901). Alfred continued to work as a carpenterjoiner and died at Jesus Lane aged 59 years old.
Mary Ann Smee (c 1836 – 24 December 1910)
Mary Ann was the daughter of John and Susanna Bennett . Her father was a builder and she was brought up in James Street. She had a double wedding with her brother George in 1869. Mary Ann died at the family home 65 Jesus Lane, Cambridge aged 74 years.
Lilian Ann Smee (10 November 1872 – 11 June 1955)
Lillian was born at Fitzroy Street, Cambridge and baptised in the Church of St Andrew the Less on 25 September 1875 aged 3. She died not marry and ran a University Lodging house from 65 Jesus Lane after her parents’ deaths. She was still running the Lodging house in September 1939, but later moved to live at 89 Kimbolton Road in Bedford. She died in Bedford aged 82 years old.
