Monument
This set of kerb stones with an open book within, is located in the northern section of the parish of Andrew the Great. The inscriptions of metal letters are in good condition. To find the monument walk west along the east west path from the centre circle. At row 13 turn right and pass 4 monuments till you get to Alden. The plot may be overgrown.

Ethel Mary Alden (1885 – 1 March 1913)
Ethel was the daughter of George and Annie Alden and grew up at 12 St. Matthew’s Court (1891) and 40 Albert Street (1911). Aged 26 she was working as a dressmaker in a shop. Ethel was a violinist and is known to have played a solo at the Theatre Royal, Barnwell in1910 in a concert in aid of the theatre mission. She died at home aged 28 years old.
Beatrice Emily Alden (1881 – 2 February 1927)
Beatrice was Ethel’s elder sister and worked as a laundress in an iron foundry (1911) and later as a waitress. She emigrated to Australia in February 1925, travelling from London on the SS ‘Moreton Bay’. She died in Queensland, and was buried there, but is remembered on the family grave in Mill Road Cemetery.
George Henry Alden (1857 – 16 January 1933)
George was the son of Robert and Elizabeth (née Claydon) Alden. He grew up at ‘Mr Sayles Houses, near the Railway Station’ and his father worked as a coal porter. George worked as a printers warehouseman and married Annie Sampson in 1878. The couple had six children: Ernest Alfred (1879-1944), Beatrice Emily, Walter (1883-1947), Ethel Mary, Elizabeth Claydon (1886-1957) and another child who died as an infant. They lived at St. Matthew’s Court, 40 Albert Street and then 40 Young Street (at least 1921 onwards). George died at home aged 75 years old.
Ann (Annie) Alden (née Sampson) (6 February 1856 – 23 February 1942)
Annie was the daughter of Joseph (1823-1897) and Ann (née Love) (1827-1874). Her father was a labourer and she grew up at 21 St. Matthew’s Court. After George’s death she continued to live at 40 Young Street with her son Ernest and daughter Elizabeth (1939) and died at home aged 86 years old.
