Arthur Mole (1 January 1828 – 5 March 1911)
Arthur was born in Felmersham, a village 7 miles north west of Bedfordshire and was the son of Joseph (1796-1849) and Elizabeth (née Butlin) (1794-1861). His father was a tailor and the family had moved to Cambridge by at least 1841, living at Salmon Lane. Arthur also trained and worked as a tailor.
He was baptised as an adult at All Saints’ Church on 9 April 1853, and married Eardly Maria (known as Maria) Bowers on 5 January 1854 at St. Clements Church. The couple had nine children: Arthur (1855-1919), William Charles (1856-1926), George Frederick (known as Fred) (1858-1936), Harry (1860-1925), Alexandra Maria (1863-1946), Thomas (known as Tom) (1865-1878), Emily Isabella (1867-1945), Alfred Frank (1870-1923) and Walter Edward (1872-1940). The family lived at 12 Clement Place (at least 1861 – 1871), North Terrace, Histon Road (1881-1891).
Arthur worked as a tailor for Barnet Beales, Sidney Street, and was there for over 50 years. Maria was a laundress. In March 1895 the couple were offered a place at the Royal Albert homes, Hills Road. Places were offered via a voting system, and Arthur came third in the ballot, receiving 377 votes and therefore qualifying for one of the three vacant homes.
He died ‘peacefully’ at home aged 83 years old after a ‘prolonged illness’ and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 8 March 1911.
Eardly Maria Mole (née Bowers) (9 November 1828 – 10 February 1920)
Known as Maria, she was the daughter of Joseph (1793-1856) and Sarah (née Anderson) (1796-1848). She was baptised at Holy Sepulchre on Christmas Day 1828. Her father was a labourer and later a sexton, her mother a laundress and the family lived on Park Street (1841).
Maria also worked as a laundress at Trinity College and continued to live at the Royal Albert homes after she was widowed. She died aged 91, after having been knocked down by a taxi on Hills Road. The inquest heard that although she was very fit for her age, she was also very deaf. She liked to go out walking, and was knocked down crossing over Brooklands Avenue at about 7.45pm. A witness said that the car was going at about 8-10 mph, and although it had some lights, it did not have its headlights on. The taxi driver, George Haslop, of James Street said that he thought one of his wheels had gone over Maria. She was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in the taxi but died here. The surgeon Dr Bull, said that some of her ribs had been broken, but that the cause of death was ‘shock from the injuries’. Maria’s father Joseph Bowers is buried in the St. Clement’s area of Mill Road Cemetery, but his grave has not yet been found. Joseph was sexton of Holy Sepulchre and was found drowned in the River Cam. He had left his shoes on the river bank, and the subsequent inquest heard that he had been ‘in a state of depression for some time past’. The inquest jury returned an open verdict – found drowned. His funeral was held on 4 August 1856.
