Alice Austin (née Godsell) (1839 – 28 December 1919)

Alice was born in the village of Ballingham, between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye. She grew up with her pauper grandmother Martha Godsell in Ballingham and aged 22 was working as a kitchenmaid at Southlands House, Tandridge, Surrey for magistrate Charles Johnston. She married William Austin in Cambridge in 1863.  William was a joiner and they had seven children: Alice Minnie (1864-1954), Rose Winifred (1866-1946), Ellen M (1869-), Daniel Clement Reuben (1878-1969), Charles William (1880-1967), another unidentified child and a child who died as an infant. All the children were born in London, but they lived briefly in Cheshire (1871) before settling in Cambridge from at least 1891 onwards. They lived at 51 Vinery Road and William worked as a carpenter in the building trade. Alice died at home and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on New Year’s Eve 1919.

William Austin (1840 – 24 April 1928)

William was born in Little Shelford and baptised there on 25 September 1841. He was the youngest child of Daniel (1791-1854) and Susanna (née Elborne) (1794-1857). Daniel was a bricklayer and he grew up at Pound Yard, Little Shelford. He worked as a carpenter/joiner throughout his life and aged 21 was lodging at School Lane, Trumpington. William died at Mill Road Infirmary aged 88 years old.

Charles William Austin (c.1880 – 9 April  1967)

Charles was born in Battersea, London and lived with his parents until their deaths. He worked as an engineer’s labourer (1901) and as a house painter (1911). He lived at 127 Vinery Road (until at least 1965) and died aged 87 years old.
