Monument

The monument in January 2025.

This set of kerbstones lie against the east wall on the southern boundary of Mary the Great. A fallen branch of ivy obscures  part of the monument. The inscription of metal letters appear intact. The flower holder is partially obscured but a cross is carved on the front.
This area is usually left to grow wild and is hard to access. The nearest large monument that may be be visible is a large broken column surrounded by a metal rail which stands next to the east path a few metres in front.

Sacred to the Memory of a beloved husband and father GEORGE BAILEY died April 19 1937 aged 46 years

Also LILY BAILEY died August 30 1946 aged 49 years

George Edward Bailey (c.February 1891 – 19 April 1937)

George was the son of Edward and Mary Bailey and grew up at  15 South Street (1891),  15 Broad Street (1901) and 4 Abbey Terrace, Abbey Street (1911). Edward Bailey was a cab driver (horse drawn carriage) and age 20 George was working as a yard labourer. He married Lily Newman in 1918 and they are believed to have had one child.  The family lived at 45 Gold Street and George died aged  46 years old.

Lily Bailey (née Newman)  (6 December 1896 – 30 August 1946)

Lily was the daughter of Alfred and Eliza and grew up at 5 Abbey Terrace, next door to her future husband.  Aged 15 she was working as an errand girl in a dressmaking business and living with her parents  and brother Frank. In 1939 she was living a 201 Ross Street with her child and working as a college servant.
